COVID-19: Mail is safe, according to WHO

As people try to keep in contact with loved ones and stay stocked up on essentials, postal workers and parcel deliverers are working hard to keep mail, letters and packages arriving at homes and businesses across the country.

Recently, public health authorities around the world and in Ireland have noted that people receiving parcels are not at risk of contracting coronavirus. Experience with other coronaviruses has shown that these types of viruses don’t survive long on porous objects, such as letters, parcels or paper.

COVID-19 is spread through droplets (like those emitted during sneezing and coughing), which is why people are asked to keep at least 2 meters (6 feet) between them and anyone else.

A statement from WHO said: “The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes Covid-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low.”

The ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) added that “there is no evidence of the infection ever being transmitted through contaminated packages that are exposed to different environmental conditions and temperatures.”

How to help to stop the spread?

Direct Mailing helps businesses during COVID-19

A recent report from JICMail revealed that business mail has the highest interaction rates of all mail types due to the personal relevance of its content to consumers. According to the research, the average business mail item is seen by 1.16 people per household.

The study also found that each business mail item is interacted with more than 4 times, with actions including opening, reading,  displaying the mail piece, and passing it on to other people in the household.
